Many days, my home feels like it’s filled more with stress than peace. I allow my children to set the tone of the day rather than setting the tone myself. On these days, the atmosphere in the home is filled with negative ideas that I don’t want my children to pick up on. Charlotte Mason’s 6th principle says that education is an atmosphere. Our children learn to do as we do, and act as we act. I recently took an eCourse from Crystal at Triumphant Learning, called Create an Atmosphere Where Children Thrive. She’s helping to equip moms like us with what they need to build a home of peace, love, and responsibility. I have always admired Crystal’s gentle wisdom! She is a Charlotte Mason homeschooling mom who exudes peace. As I took the course, I felt like I had a wise mentor helping me personally!
What I Learned
The course is broken up into several modules: Welcome, schedule, tone, relationships, responsibility, and final thoughts. Most of the modules have multiple videos that are full of examples and things that we can do to grow in those areas. Each module has workbook pages to print off and journal through. I loved that portion of it because the questions were so thought provoking. I had never thought of our family’s mission statement, or even what we really enjoy doing together. This challenged me to really think of our family’s identity in order to hone in on our values.
Crystal gave examples of what she did with her children when they were preschoolers. I found this so helpful! She mentioned turning responsibilities over to her children when they were very young. I often forget that I’m supposed to do this. Instead of expecting my children to clean up for themselves, I sometimes forget and trail behind them, cleaning up messes. This doesn’t teach them that what we do has consequences if I am constantly keeping the consequences from them! If they make a mess, they should clean it up!
My Favorite Part
The module on Tone was my favorite. It could be the pregnancy hormones, but I’ve felt like a very reactive parent lately. I’ve allowed my children to set the tone, and then sometimes react really emotionally when this builds up. This course reminded me that I should be the one setting the tone and atmosphere in the home. If I lead the way in gentleness and peace, those things will eventually follow.
I also loved how this course showed a strong understanding of the Charlotte Mason philosophy, but it managed to be applicable to everyone. If you could use some inspiration to transform your home atmosphere, this course is for you! What better time to create an atmosphere where children thrive than in the early years??
