An Advent Journey with Sonlight

October 2, 2024 Leave a Comment

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make Advent and Christmas a memorable time. There are gifts to be purchased and a house to decorate, but most importantly, hearts to be reached. What we teach our children during Advent is by for the most important, so choosing the right study for the Christmas season is a big deal. Amidst all the busyness, a study that has all the supplies you need and is open-and-go is so helpful! Sonlight's Advent Unit Study: Jotham's Journey is perfect for busy families.

Jotham's Journey

Since we shifted from a Charlotte Mason homeschool family to a Charlotte Mason school family this year, we have less time to use a Christmas study. But, reading every night at Advent has been a Christmas tradition that we want to continue.

This Advent study is centered around the book, Jotham's Journey, which will be easy to add to our evening devotions. It is organized in a way that makes it clear to see which chapter goes on which day of Advent. We've wanted to read Jotham's Journey for years now, but since my youngest will turn seven soon, the timing seems right. The book is action-packed and has some violence in it, so waiting a little while to read this was a good choice for us.

Sonlight's Teacher's Guide

I've used Sonlight enough to know that their teacher guide is what so many people love about it! (They even have some free literature studies available here!)  Each week of this four-week study is planned out for you. It tells you when to make the included recipes, complete the crafts, sing the songs, or read the scriptures. There are also questions that will lead to sweet discussions with your family!

Most of the craft supplies you need are included in the kit. This is incredibly helpful for us as our spare time is precious these days. I also appreciate that the crafts are simple and not too involved. My children are at the point where they want to do most of these on their own, and it's frustrating for them if I have to offer too much assistance.

Christmas Crafts

If you think Christmas is the coziest time for crafting, like I do, you'll love the cute crafts included in this study. My three made tea light snowmen, and I was kicking myself for never thinking of it. The little light of the tea light is the nose, and then we added eyes and ear muffs. What a sweet idea! Even my youngest did most of it alone, although letting him at it with a hot glue gun is always a risk.

We're also looking forward to making pine bough garland, glittery treat jars, and pinecone bird feeders. This is such a beautiful way to celebrate Advent!
