It’s November, and Colorado hasn’t had a single snowflake yet. Our state is getting antsy, as we usually get a good snowfall in late October or early November. The first year I lived here, we had almost a foot of snow towards the end of October. My school district was out for two days, but later the same week, it was 70 again and the snow melted like it had never happened. I guess Colorado weather has always been anything but predictable! Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to learning about snow with Miss H. She is making connections between what we’re reading and what we experience, so I can’t wait to see her connect to these books about snow.
Owl Moon– This is an award winning story about searching for owls on a cold winter evening. Since we read books about owls in the fall, Miss H will have some background knowledge already.
The Snowy Day
– We went through a phase last winter where we read this book every single day. It describes a little boy playing in the snow. Miss H gets really concerned when Peter’s snowball melts. This led to some good discussions about the properties of snow!
The Big Snow– We found this book by accident at the library. I love classics like this (it was written in 1948). In this story, animals prepare for the first snow of the season.
It talks about different birds, making this a good (although fictional) story to read before nature study.
Snowflake Bentley– When I taught at a public school, I read this book to my students. It tells the story of a man who spent much of his life observing and photographing snowflakes. I love books like this that inspire curiosity about nature! I also found this website that has information about the real Snowflake Bentley, which might be a great supplement to a lesson!
On a Wintry Morning– This is a sweet rhyming book that describes a dad and his daughter going out for a carriage ride in the snow. It is set in the early 1900’s (that’s my best guess!) and I love the scenes it describes. Miss H wants to asks to read this one over and over again.
Secrets of Winter– Miss H has a couple of the Usborne Shine A Light books. I love this non-fiction book about winter, because it helps children develop thinking skills while reading. She loves getting to hold the flashlight up to the book to reveal the “secret.”
The Smallest Snowflake– A little snowflake wonders where the wind will take her. The pictures are my favorite part!
Where Snowflakes Fall– We love reading about the arctic animals in this book. The text is a well-written in rhyming verse.
The Snowflake : A Water Cycle Story– The water cycle is a great science topic to teach about in the winter! The text in this book is very descriptive.
The Mitten– This a Ukranian folktale told by Jan Brett. My students always loved this one! There are also other versions of The Mitten, so it might be fun to read the different renditions!
Katy and the Big Snow– This is a great choice for little ones who love trucks! I like that this story goes into detail about what it takes to clear the roads in the winter. That isn’t something that we discuss much or read about often in our house! This book has a great storyline.
It’s Snowing!– When I put together my list of fall books, I loved reading Gail Gibbon’s non-fiction works. Full disclosure: I haven’t read this book yet because we couldn’t track it down at our library. We will definitely read it this winter.
